Come si dice, a volte ritornano. E il ritorno è ancora più gradito quando è inaspettato. Come nel caso degli Stolen Cars: formatisi nel 1986, in pieno revival garage, con all’attivo un solo 7” e una manciata di brani in compilation varie. Non molto, ma più che a sufficienza per raccogliere consensi importanti anche all’estero. Poi, lo scioglimento, con Il Metius (voce), Michele “Mick” Anelli (basso) e JoJo (chitarra) a dare il via ad altre avventure, rispettivamente Thee STP, The Groovers e Changing Men. Tutto questo fino allo scorso anno, quando i tre hanno reclutato il nuovo batterista Max e deciso di riprendere a far musica insieme. E “Can’t Stop Thee Stolen Cars” è esattamente il risultato che ci si può aspettare da una reunion del genere: garage rock ad altissima tensione, suonato con lo spirito di un gruppo di ventenni e con classe da veterani. Dodici i brani al suo interno (undici originali più una ottima cover di “Hey Little Bird” dei Barbarians) all’insegna di un rock grezzo e selvaggio al punto giusto, spigoloso e spensierato come si conviene, tribale ma non privo di melodie, tra richiami agli anni 60 del primo “Nuggets” e una potenza e una pulizia sonora ben più vicine alla contemporaneità – merito anche al lavoro in cabina di regia dell’ex Shandon Olly. “Christine”, “Shake It, Baby!”, “Down On Me” e “Criminal People” sono solo alcuni dei pezzi forti di una scaletta che non conosce cedimenti; una iniezione di grinta ed entusiasmo r’n’r in grado di smuovere anche chi, purtroppo per lui, certe sonorità di solito non le frequenta

If these are rock and roll's dying days, there sure is a sizeable contingent of the reanimated dead turning up early for the wake. So many reformations, so little time. As all these acts emerge from the back pages, hungry for what's left of the action on their own Blues Brothers-styled missions from God, it's wise to sort the wheat from the chaff. Some are dire and others - like Italy's Thee Stolen Cars - are worth hearing.
Part of the garage rock revival of the '80s, Thee (that part's a giveaway to the origins) Stolen Cars only issued a vinyl EP in their heyday, but it was enough to set the likes of arch-chronicler Timothy Gassen, er, gushing in his famous "The Knights of Fuzz" tome (aka the garage band Who's Who.) Members have been active in a stack of other bands (The Groovers, Thee STP) since the Cars stopped rolling in the early '90s, but came to the conclusion in 2006 that the world would be a better place with their renewed presence. So the revival trend continues...
There isn't a sub par moment on the 12-track return album which fairly bounces out of the speakers with enough verve to prove the fire still burns for these veterans. One of the picks is a re-recorded "Christine", the centrepiece of their '80s EP apparently. Singer Il Metius holds court like a rough-hewn Lee Brilleaux (there's a lot of Dr Feelgood-meets-The-Fleshtones in these grooves) while the engine room of Mick Groover (bass) and Max (drums) drives relentlessly forward with the required amount of rock AND roll. Guitarist Changing Jo Jo (where do these Italian and French band members get these names?) has a nice twang to his tone.
The tunes are full of hooks and singalong choruses and are all originals, bar one. If you can judge a garage band by it's choice of cover, Thee Stolen Cars must be cool 'cos they went for The Barbarians' 1964 single "Hey Little Bird."
Yeah, I know you've heard all the garage stuff a hundred times over and revivals are often not as good the second time around, let along the third, but there's something in this one that'll kick it ahead of the pack.

Sembra che nel cortiletto del rock alternativo tricolore il garage stia tornado a tirare quasi quanto un pelo di fica: sempre alternativo, s’intende! È stata da poco ristampata l’opera omnia dei grandi Pikes In Panic, vecchi leoni tipo i Sick Rose ruggiscono come ai bei tempi, qualcuno sta addirittura tornando in pista. È il caso degli Stolen Cars, band lombarda che nella seconda metà degli ’80 incise soltanto un 7” ma che vanta l’onore di essere stata inserita nel volume The Knights of Fuzz di fianco a Fuzztones, Tell Tale Hearts, Gravedigger V e compagnia urlante. Tributo più che meritato, anche alla luce di questo nuovo disco della combriccola capitanata dal carismatico frontman degli STP. Un disco frizzante e corrosivo come l’aranciata di Eurospin, in cui si alternano gran numeri di garage “classico” (Down On Me, Love You No More), sferzate alla Ramones (I Don’t Wanna Go!) e aperture soul (Shake It, Baby!). Non, non è un’operazione nostalgia. Tutt’altro.

Gli Stolen Cars si formarono una ventina di anni fa, fecero un 7”, qualche altro pezzo su compilation varie e poi all’inizio degli anni ’90 si sciolsero, con i singoli membri che intrapresero le rispettive carriere (STP, Changing Men, The Groovers).
L’anno scorso, dopo aver reclutato un nuovo batterista, alla band è tornata la voglia di suonare insieme per qualche concerto (e ho avuto la fortuna di assistere allo show del “ritorno”). Da lì a sfornare un album intero il passo è stato molto breve e con la produzione di Olly (ex-Shandon) la band nello scorso inverno si è messa al lavoro dando alla luce questo album di debutto (a più di 20 anni dalla nascita della band: sicuramente il debutto più atteso della storia!) che esce in collaborazione tra la Nicotine e l’Ammonia.
Si tratta fondamentalmente di garage, di rock’n’roll che sa molto di punkrock ed il vero pregio del cd secondo me sta nel sound globale: musica selvaggia e maleducata ma suonata con grande cura ai particolari. Stiamo del resto parlando di una band composta da rockers che hanno ormai una lunghissima esperienza.
Le garare band danno spesso la sensazione di qualcosa di sgangherato (in senso positivo!), ma ascoltando questo cd quest’impressione proprio non viene perché i suoni, anche se duri, risultano perfetti e molto accattivanti, e dunque possono essere apprezzati anche se non si è abituati a queste sonorità.
Aggiungiamoci ritornelli molto easy, un po’ di beat, una spruzzata di surf (My Way Of Lovin’) e la voce del Metius (se già siete abituati ad essa vi verrà davvero semplice farvi prendere, con quell’impostazione mooolto r’n’r) ed ecco qua un disco che potranno apprezzare in tanti, da chi ascolta i Rolling Stone e i Sonics a chi ascolta punkrock

Old school garage r&b rock'n'roll with a neat mixture of raunch and catchiness. This band has been around for years, and their craftsmanship is pretty flawless - Italy's answer to the Fleshtones? Of course they steal/borrow like hell, "Criminal People" is basically Clash's "Janie Jones" with new lyrics, haha.

Nati nel 1986, gli Stolen Cars sono stati definiti una delle migliori band garage italiane nel libro "The knights of Fuzz" di Tim Gassen. Non tutti si ricorderanno diquesta band ma quando si legge che alla voce è presente Il Metius (ora famoso per i suoi S.T.P.) il marchio di qualità è d'obbligo. Gli Stolen Cars avevano prodotto solo un 7 pollici all'inizio della loro carriera e poi qualche canzone in svariate compilation.
Oggi a venti anni dalla loro nascita questi ragazzi ormai cresciuti decidono di riformare la band che ha dato loro tante soddisfazioni con il primo disco ufficiale. Lo stile non è cambiato, il garage sporco e cattivo è sempre quello di una volta e l'intensità è quella di musicisti con una grande esperienza maturata sui palchi. Basti ascoltare brani come "Christine" o "Down on me" per rendersi conto del valore di questa band.
Gli Stolen Cars fanno sul serio e lo si sente nello stile, che ha tutte le carte in tavola per poter sfondare a livello mondiale. Ogni brano suona come un inno e coinvolge con i suoi arrangiamenti degni della grande scuola punkrock italiana. Il Metius si impone ancora una volta come uno dei migliori artisti rocker italiani grazie alla sua esperienza ma anche al valore artistico delle sue creazioni, mai banali e dallo stile vincente.

Originating from the Italian heydays of garage punk, this band was formed back in the eighties. Their only milestone at that time was a 7” EP featuring four songs. Later on some Stolen Cars cuts where inserted in different compilations and their tune Christine made it even to the top ten of a Bilbao radio station for a couple of weeks. By the beginning of the nineties the band quit the scene, but all members stayed active in the music for the years to come. Now about twenty years later, three original members revived the band and recruited a new drummer. Is the chemistry of the band members or maybe their matured attitude or simply the experience they gained, I don’t know but one thing is for sure, the band is still in good shape and pretty soon new songs where popping up. Reason enough to gather the good old tunes from way back in time and record some new ones on their full-length debut!
Tunes like “Christine” or “Down on me” does bear the mark of the eighties and are pretty much influenced by a band like the Ramones, but I really don’t care, cause even after all this time it still sounds good. The majority of the tunes are straightforward garage-rock songs that are influenced by all kinds of bands over the years. While main influences are named to be Little Richard, Otis Redding, Elvis, or the Rolling Stones, its pretty much clear that later bands like the Kinks, the Sonics, the Stooges, or the Ramones have had a much bigger influence on their sound & style.
The band is certainly worth to be heard and with the help of this good recorded album chances are big they will find an audience in Europe.

I heard this band a few months on My Space and thought nothing of it until this album come flying in through the letter box. It was a bit of a struggle to remove it from my German Shephards jaws but I managed it and I'm glad I did. It's good to hear a band that draws it's influences from great artists such as Little Richard, The Kinks And The Ramones but still manage to create something that doesn't reek of blatant copying. There's twelve tracks in all and all are kick ass Rock N Roll tunes that need to be played loud! And I mean loud! For me tracks like 'I Don't Wanna Go!', 'Shake It Baby' and 'Love You No More' are spot on numbers. This Italian band really do need to be heard!

Introdotti dalla voce del carismatico singer e noto personaggio nell'ambiente Rock'n'Roll nostrano come il Metius (Thee Stp), arrivano anzi tornano i suoi Stolen Cars, gruppo nato a metà degli anni '80 e successivamente abbandonato per percorrere nuove strade (vedi la nascita dei seguenti gruppi: The Stp appunto, The Groovers e i Changing Men).
Ma se il tempo porta consiglio, mai detto fu più azzeccato per gli Stolen Cars visto che questo loro ritorno viene segnato da un album che, oltre a poterlo tranquillamente considerare come un debutto visto che in precedenza era stato solo stampato un loro 7", è un'autentica gemma di garage punk che fa' l'occhiolino a gruppi come The (I) Noise Conspiracy, Sonics e Kinks.
Qui non mancano pezzi che vi faranno muovere il culo (A Girl Like You, Christine, Criminal People, Baby. I Just Can't Stop It) con continui richiami in ambientazione surf (Down On Me, My Way of Lovin', Love You no More, It's the Same Old Situation) e qualche accenno al beat (Shake it Baby, Ain't Pretty Down Here).
E ora dopo una fatica del genere, chi oserà mai fermare questi vecchiacci???

adesso siamo quasi al completo. L'operazione garage nostalgia questa volta tocca infatti i redivivi Stolen Cars che riaccendono la spia discografica vent'anni dopo l'arrivo sulla scena revival tricolore. Un movimento meno intenso se paragonato a quello americano dello stesso periodo ma assolutamente prezioso e pieno di sorprese. Se i Sick Rose sono stati la punta di diamante, band come i bolognesi Avvoltoi guidati da Moreno Lambertini, i Silver Surfers di Mauro Florean (poi nei Bats e nei Rappresaglia), i pisani Steeplejack, i senesi Pikes In Panic (occhio alla nuova ristampa "Right Or wrong, They're Still The Captains" su Gravedigger's Records) e appunto gli Stolen Cars hanno invece rappresentato il crudo sottobosco fatto di passione e sudore. "Can't Stop" ha tutte le caratteristiche per poter essere esploso dal vivo. Una band infarcita d'esperienza (da ricordare i progetti lasciati alle spale in questi anni come Thee STP, The Groovers e Changing Men) che non ha dimenticato le splendide parole spese anni fa da Tim Gassen nella ruspante bibbia del genere The Knights Of Fuzz. Sound essenziale. Riff rockabilly passati nella centrifuga del surf punk di marca Ramones (in questo senso qualche episodio calca un po' troppo la mano) e il faro sempre acceso con le vibrazioni alcaline targate Sonics e Seeds. Un disco che non può mancare nella "nuova" collezione degli indefessi estimatori del garage di questo millennio.
