Ne knappe halbe Stunde Punk`n`Roll gibt’s heute aus Frankreich. Nicht gerade neu was man da hört, aber alles sehr knackig & frisch. Die wirklich großen Hits fehlen hier aber leider. Schade das es nicht mehr Songs a la „Hammersmith Palais“ gibt. Wer auf wirklich sehr old schooligen Sound dieser Marke steht, darf ruhig mal ein Ohr riskieren

Già visti su questi schermi, i francesi Ashtones mantengono alta la loro nomea di folgorati da “Young, loud and snotty”! Punk ’77 zozzissimo per una tracklist di 11 pezzi suddivisa in “Wild ones” e “Raw ones”: iniezioni di rock’n’roll con la pala, voce affogata simil-Cheetah come piace a me, esperienza decennale e grande attitudine. Non ho la più pallida idea di quale capitolo sia questo, ma la loro discografia è abbastanza vasta, fatta di vinile, cd, raccolte: insomma, date la caccia.
Segnalo con gioia la presenza di un paio di cover ben piazzate: “Hammersmith Palais” dei grandiosi Demolition 23 di Michael Monroe (forse la migliore band di punk ’77 del ’77 degli anni ’90, durata coerentemente il tempo di un disco) e “So bored with the USA”, per tutti voi Strummermaniaci.

Ogni ulteriore laude è superflua, considerato lo spessore degli Ashtones. Mainline rockets è un disco che sta magnificamente in piedi da solo, e che fossi in voi mi procurerei immediatamente, senza colpo ferire.

The full-throated roar of twin guitars on opener "She Goes Commando" makes it clear that these French miscreants are out to avenge the musical crimes that every techno and house music exponent in their country ever committed. That's a lot of avenging. This is go-for-the-throat, honest-to-goodness rawkin' punk that'll give you the finger if you don't like it.

There's nothing complicated about the tuneage - three-chord blasts of Dead Boys-styled napalm divided into "Raw Ones and "Wild Ones" - but it's delivered with the force of two Russian sailors on vodka-fuelled shore-leave fighting over the same hooker. In other words, get out of the way, the fleet's in town.

Their first album had some good songs but was hampered by cotton-wool production and an apparent lack of mastering. No such handicaps this time out. "Mainline Rockets" fairly leaps out of the speakers and demands to be heard. The producer's uncredited on the review copy but he or she has a good ear for guitar tone.

"The Biggest Prick" might be a dubious way of titling a tribute (if that's what it is) to Dee Dee Ramone but it's a mighty catchy song. There are aplenty more where that came from with "Blonde Danger", "She Goes Commando" and the rabble-rousing "Hammersmith Palais" stand-outs.

There's nothing wrong with the Ashtones take on "I'm So Bored With The USA" either.

Ashtone Olivz isn't the subtlest timekeeper but he pounds out a heavyweight backbeat that'd split rocks. Vocalist Ashtone Ge lives out the songs with a desperation born of singing rock and roll in a country where it isn't very welcome, but it's the guitar-playing of Ashtone Max and Ashtone D'Stroy that does it for me. They'll probably do the same for you.

I once mistakenly called these guys German. If you knew the French, that's a helluva gaffe. So, sorry about that Chiefs!

In der Aachener Punkrockszene besitzen die Ashtones aus Nordfrankreich schon so etwas wie einen Legendenstatus, haben sie doch die Szenekneipe das Hauptquartier zu ihrem zweiten Wohnzimmer auserkoren und spielen dort in stetiger Regelmäßigkeit. Sogar der Käsemann auf dem Aachener Neumarkt trägt hin und wieder ein T-Shirt der Ashtones. Das Quintett ist live in kleinen, schwitzigen Clubs einfach eine Wucht. Mit ihrem Rawk'n'Roll genannten Garage-Punk können die Ashtones auch auf ganzer Linie überzeugen und spielen sich eh andauernd auf Tour den Arsch ab. Und auch auf ihrem neuen Album "Mainline Rocket" gibt es im Grunde nichts Neues. Dieser ewige Ashtones Punkrocksound knallt aber einfach gut. Die Stooges, alte Crypt Records-Bands, Motörhead und auch die New York Dolls haben die Ashtones wohl zu dem gemacht, was sie heute sind: einfach eine der energischsten und mächtigsten Punk'n'Roll Bands in Europa.

Vulgar, big riff rock n’ roll from France that blends the punk rock elements of the DEAD BOYS and PAGANS with the more full-on rock sound of TURBONEGRO and HANOI ROCKS and maybe even at times like a way more rock ‘n’ roll MOTORHEAD. It’s nice and straightforward with a real punk rock structure which works really well – especially in songs like ‘Hammersmith Palais’ that sound like the SEX PISTOLS being covered by TURBONEGRO which is fine by me! I’m very fussy about how punk and rock ‘n’ roll mix but I dig the way these guys do it because it never gets too rockin’ in a heavy rock / metallic way. First time I ever heard these guys and I’m impressed.

Een van de bands met de meeste street credibility is ontegenzeggelijk de Ashtones. Deze uit Lille afkomstige band moet zo ongeveer op straat in een van de meer naargeestige wijken van Lille zijn samengesteld uit (ex)-junks, alcoholisten, zwervers en personen met een achtergrond dat aan alle kanten naar de goot stinkt. Het zijn overigens allemaal erg aardige gasten, dus een optreden van deze vuig rockende Fransen kan met een gerust hart worden bezocht. Op de nieuwe plaat doet de band waar het zo goed in is. Straatrock met woeste riffs en dito energie. De productie is weer een niveautje hoger dan voorganger Hellfire And... Paradise Falls. Ashtones heeft nooit een geheim gemaakt waar de invloeden vandaan komen (The Stooges uiteraard en daarnaast ongeveer alle punkbands die er toe doen) en speelt al haar hele bestaan covers van deze bands. Ook op Mainline Rockets staan er weer een paar, maar wellicht dat de band daarin een beetje doorslaat. Zo doet The Clash cover I'm So Bored With The USA nogal overbodig aan. Dat is dan ook meteen het enige punt van kritiek, want voor de rest is Mainline Rockets een knaller van een plaat. Binnenkort komen ze weer naar Nederland. Gaat dat zien!

Questi sì che sono marci, sporchi e imbecilli. E con un nome del genere non poteva essere altrimenti. Gli Ashtones arrivano da Lille, estremo nord della Francia, ma sembrano in tutto e per tutto una vecchia, fastidiosa punk band a stelle e strisce dei tardi ‘70. Più Dead Boys (che omaggiano rileggendo What Love Is) che Stooges, spiccano tra la marmaglia dei troppi gruppuscoli derivativi soprattutto per merito del frontman Ashtone Gé: un tipaccio cinquantenne di una magrezza imbarazzante, che pare ciò che sarebbe potuto essere oggi Stiv Bators. La sua voce ferina e catarrosa si muove come una bestia in gabbia tra le maglie strettissime del punk squadrato partorito dai quattro squilibrati che lo accompagnano. I 9 pezzi in studio e i 6 dal vivo, posti in coda, testimoniano che certo punk sguaiato e fuori controllo (vale a dire onesto) non cesserà mai di esistere. Ne è prova l’ennesima, strasentita cover di Search & Destroy che continua a provocare strani formicolii sottopelle.

Gli amanti del genere non avrebbero neanche bisogno di andare avanti nella lettura.
Con un nome che è una dichiarazione di intenti, ecco gli Ashtones, francesi, figliocci di Iggy Pop, nonchè nuova scoperta dell'attivissima Nicotine Records di Tortona. La piccola label si è fatta le ossa continuando a pubblicare band situate in quella terra di nessuno in cui il garage rock dei 70s si fonde con lo spirito del punk 77.Detto ciò, Hellfire and… Paradise Falls ha tutto quello che ci si potrebbe aspettare da gente cresciuta a pane e Stooges, ovvero cascate di riffs torrenziali, velocità cieca e una rabbia ferina. Anzi, si può dire che per canzoni come Dealing With Coke Slut e Hate Me la rabbia sia l'unica ragion d'essere. Brani come l'incendiaria A She-devil Is My Dope Fiend o l'opener Youngblood Fuck Off nascono dalla penna di chi non solo ha sfinito gli album di New York Dolls e Dead Boys, ma li ha vissuti sulla propria pelle.
Se ci fossero dei dubbi le cover di Search And Destroy e What Love Is sono lì per fugarli. Come dire: se proprio ci accuseranno di plagio, almeno confrontiamoci con il meglio del repertorio dei nostri idoli. Naturalmente non si vive di soli tributi. Che dire allora dei brani originali? Puro caos organizzato, rasoiate arruginite e un tanta, tanta violenza gratuita che trova sfogo nelle danze frenetice di Pekinese Cheeks o nei rituali selvaggi di Burn, Baby.
Se una pecca può essere trovata nell'ottimo lavoro svolto dai francesi, questa è semmai da rintracciare nella scelta di includere nell'album sei brani tratti da un precedente ep registrato dal vivo nel 2006. Purtroppo la resa sonora non è delle migliori e nel marasma sabbatico ad emergere sono le urla belluine del singer Ashtone Gé. Poco male, perchè lo-fi o meno questa è musica che nasce per colpire frontalmente l'ascoltatore.
E nel caso degli Ashtones ci riesce senza alcuno sforzo.

Continua l'opera di evangelizzazione al rock'n'roll da parte della Nicotine Records. Questa volta i missionari vengono dalla Francia e si chiamano Ashtones. Con quasi una decade di carriera gli Ashtones si dipanano tra stili che costituiscono una garanzia sonora come Dead Boys e Ramones. Un suono ruvido e bello sporco nella classica tradizione street-punk quello degli Ashtones, che propongono una selezione di ben quindici brani tra i quali sono presenti anche due cover come "What love is" di Stiv Bator e soci, e "Search & Destroy" degli immancabili Stooges.
"Hellfire and... Paradise Falls" contiene anche brani significativi come "A she-devil is my dope fiend" e "Hate me" assieme ad una serie di tracce registrate live. Tutti i retaggi del punkrock si respirano in questo album dalla prima all'ultima nota, con un pregevole salto nel passato. Lunga vita al punkrock e alla tradizione francese.

La Nicotine Records porta in Italia sempre grandi nomi del punkrock internazionale, ultimi tra questi i francesi Ashtones, già noti nella scena europea per il loro stile immediato e orientato a sonorità della tradizione rock`n`roll come New York Dolls e Dead Boys. Immancabili quindi anche le cover che sono presenti, ovvero “Search and destroy” degli Stooges e “What love is” dei Dead Boys. “Hellfire and... Paradise Falls” è una raccolta di quindici tracce che oltre al 10” di “A She-devil is my dope fiend” regala anche sei tracce live.
Un sound sporco che richiama il vero street-punk di una volta fa brillare gli occhi agli amanti del genere grazie a pezzi come “Hate me” o “Garbage Can”. Sette anni di carriera con il nome Ashtones si sentono nel songwriting a da oggi ancora più vicini al pubblico italiano grazie alla sempre più attiva Nicotine Records.

Ein schöner Zehnzöller, den die Franzosen hier vorlegen. Beim Albumtitel dachte ich sofort an die DEMONICS und die CRAMPS. Die ASHTONES wildern aber eher im rotzigen und verschwitzten US-Punk'n'Roll der alten Schule, also bei den DEAD BOYS, HEARTBREAKERS, STOOGES und greifen zudem Energie und Hitpotenzial späterer Vertreter wie den HUMPERS, NEW BOMB TURKS und DEVIL DOGS auf, kombiniert mit einem wunderbar verrauchten und versoffenen Gesang. Nach soviel Namedropping kann ich nur sagen: Tolle Scheibe!

„A she-male is my dope fiend“... Französisches New York-Rawk’n’Roll Tribute Orchester mit eigener Note. Pate für Namen und Sound standen die STOOGES (Ron Asheton), DEAD BOYS und RAMONES, die Verehrung gestaltet sich aber angenehmerweise nur zweiten Grades.
Blutsverwandtschaft ist klar vorhanden, die Spur zum CBGB’s anno 1976/77 vortrefflich gelegt. Das Hellfire raucht und scheppert im wüsten Retro-Style und atmet den verruchten Spirit vergangener Tage. Selbst der Live-Part (inklusive „Search & Destroy“) ist in akzeptabler Qualität genießbar und lässt das Schwein fett rocken.

I wish I had a lyric sheet because nobody brutalizes English quite like the French do. It’s awesome. Anyway, the Ashtones rip n’ roll with razor sharp teeth on this full-frontal action-rock attack. This is the band’s debut album, and it’s neatly divided into studio and live cuts. The studio tracks are raw and bloody, but retain a palpable reverence for the sounds they mine – Stooges, Thunders, Pistols, the usual suspects. Standout has gotta be “Dealing With a Coke Slut”, mostly for it’s shameless ferocity. The cover of “What Love Is” is pretty tasteful, considering its origins. The live cuts are not much different (they’re mostly the same songs as well, plus a dive-bombing “Search and Destroy”), but they add a whiff of chaos into the mix. Overall, a pretty fiery introduction to these French riot-starters. Do not expect an acoustic version anytime soon.

Primo disco dei francesi Ashtones, uno dei tanti bei gruppi della Nicotine Records, tra le etichette davvero più interessanti a livello europeo per il genere power-pop-punk-garage-rockabilly. Ci sono infatti i grandiosi Brain Eater, i trevigiani HighSchool Lockers, i Fleshtones, Slapstick, Stolen Cars e via discorrendo. Tutte formazioni, tra l'altro, recensite su queste pagine. Gli Ashtones esordiscono con un gagliardo punk'n'roll - che non mi ha fatto gridare al miracolo ululando alla luna - ma che sono riuscito ad ascoltarlo un sacco di volte. Sarà che sento dentro l'influenza dei Briefs, i miei amati The Briefs, in brani come 'Burn Baby' o la fracassona 'Hate Me', in cui davvero sembra di sentire la band di Seattle con tutti quei coretti veloci. C'è anche una cover molto ben riuscita di 'What Love Is' della premiata ditta Stiv Bators/Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys per gli sprovveduti). Il disco poi prosegue con altri sei brani live, sinceramente evitabili anche perchè la registrazione non è un granchè. Se vi piace questa roba vi piaceranno sicuramente gli Ashtones. Dritti in gola in cartavetra. L'ho detto il genere? No? Ok, è rock'n'roll.

"Wie haalt de Ashtones naar Groningen!?" was de afsluitende zin van de recensie van de vorig jaar verschenen ep A She-Devil Is My Dope Fiend. Het was uiteindelijk de ORKZ Bar die de Ashtones een podium gaf in Groningen. Een , ondanks enkele technische problemen, gedreven optreden. Na een handje vol ep's is er op de valreep van 2007 eindelijk het officiële full length debuut van de Noordfransen.

Dat is natuurlijk goed nieuws. Helaas is er ook slecht nieuws te melden. Op Hellfire And... Paradise Falls staan namelijk de negen nummers die ook op A She-Devil Is My Dope Fiend staan, aangevuld met zes livetracks. Een fikse tegenvaller voor degenen die nieuw werk vewachtten, een uitgelezen kans voor degenen die de in zeer beperkte oplage alleen op vinyl uitgegeven ep van vorig jaar gemist hebben. Ondertussen heeft Ashtones wel een paar nieuwe nummers in de studio opgenomen. Hopelijk worden daar nog een paar nummers aan toegevoegd zodat volgend jaar de tweede full length met alleen maar nieuw werk zal verschijnen. Aan het Italiaanse Nicotine Records is te danken dat de negen tracks van A She-Devil Is My Dope Fiend nu ook op cd zijn verschenen. Dat ze vaart mogen zetten achter de volgende Ashtonesrelease.

Ennesimo dono del sempre ottimo Alberto Nicotine, che mi telefona per annunciarmi l’avvenuta spedizione del disco dei franchi Ashtones, punk rock’n’roll band con ben sette anni di attività sul groppone. Gran bella mazzata, e non avevo dubbi, visto il biglietto da visita. Influenza Stooges, New York Dolls, Dead Boys e Ramones, senza riguardo alcuno per l’Inghilterra. Che vuoi di più?
A livello di sonorità, impossibile non accorgersi della pesantissima influenza del terzo gruppo chiamato in causa (a tratti li ricordano vistosamente, e se Ashtone Gé non è Stiv Bators, comunque assomiglia abbastanza al Cheetah solista). Caotici e sparati, senza compromessi: perfetti per chi non vuole altro che cazzotti nei padiglioni auricolari dall’inizio alla fine del disco.
Una selezione di ben quindici pezzi, che include il 10’’ “A She-Devil is my dope friend” più altri sei brani registrati dal vivo. All’interno della scaletta, un’ottima cover di “What love is” dei sopracitati e una gran versione di “Search & destroy”, classicone di Iggy & The Stooges.
Godereccio e assolutamente consigliato a tutti i maledetti punkrockers che leggono la Lama. Tenete d’occhio il catalogo Nicotine, stanno portando in Italia gruppi stranieri che sono una bomba.
