ReviewsShot My TV - Bubblegum Slut ...Steeped in a lifetime of New York stories, The Gonedaddys possess the hallmark identity of an act from one of the most mixed up metropolis on earth. By turns trashy, sharp-tongued, charming and even sweet, this debut record is streetwise for sure- just see the true grit of the jumpy, jittering 'The Shakes" or savage and brilliant 'How to be a Punk'- but it is something else which lends it an authenticity quite aside from what try-hard tough guys aspiring to a piece of scene the Gonedaddys created can come up with. That something is fearlessness when it comes to exporing life's flipside,(...) It may only be dirty punk'n'roll, but it's of the most real, honest and expressive sort, which makes it very hard to dislike. Shot My TV by Carl Isonhart - www.sonicruin.com Skinny Bones & The Gonedaddys – Are On TV: When this CD first started, the first song started driving me crazy while I was trying to figure out who the hell they reminded me of. Yeah, that’s a poor way of describing bands, but at times it is the best way to handle this, especially when it drives you as crazy as it was. Then I realized the voice and style was making me think of mid-first generation TSOL, before the Metal damage. Skinny Bones play a form of RnR, Glam, Punk, and this CD gets better as the play time progresses. Track one “The Shakes” opens with that old Orange County vibe to it, but the chorus holds a bit of a Mod feel to it. Nice open to the CD for sure and enough to catch your ear. “She’s Working Me Over” is a tad Bubblegummy and Glammy Pop, and kind of loses me a little bit. My not being overly fond of Bubblegummy stuff (aside from actual bubblegum) is the main problem, I think. Now, I’ve been going track by track for a reason here this time, not just some pitiful attempt to be really indepth, but rather to lead up to track three, “On The Roof”, mainly due to what a big departure it is from the rest. The tune reminds me a bit of mid-period Replacements, and this is kind of where the band started making me think “hey…if you had Stiv Bators and Bob Stinson form a band with Johnny Thunders (solo break/bridge thing just happened in the song and it is sooo Bob Stinson it isn’t funny), and get Jim Carroll to rock with them…then yeah…this could be it…” “Shit In My Head” is further proof to that description. It is also a fine example of how to make a brilliant chorus, one that will stick in your head all damn day. No questioning how the fuck this shit got in your head though! It’s because it is a great chorus that is so understated in it’s intensity that it just works. “Lantern Light” just reeks coolness man. Great street RnR ala the cool bands from the late 80’s such as The Hangmen with Thunder-ish bends in the chorus that stay in key, just pure coolness. “Luv Me Like Darth Vader”, aside from being a fun as hell song, shows the colors a little bit with the mention of Stiv Bator in the verse, and also with the mention of Dictators (either a real Dictator, or one of the cool ones, we are not sure). Oh, and there is that TSOL/Orange County backing vocal sounding thing on the end. I need some research to find out if these guys do have that influence or back ground. Skinny Bones and gang are a very cool RnR band in the Thunders/Replacements/Stiv-solo style with a touch of Orange County Punk thrown in, and touches possibly of The Leaving Trains (thanks to songs like “I Wanna Pet Cats For A Living”). They are all sorts of fun, all sorts of cool, and all sorts of exceedingly refreshing in my life at this moment. They are also one of those wonderful bands that even if a verse isn’t quite working for me (“Shit In My Head” and “Time Won’t Wait”, the chorus comes along and makes it all worthwhile. By the way, these guys are available on Nicotine Records, a label that keeps proving that they know what the hell they are doing. Between re-issues, re-packing of older bands, and their quality new releases, the folks there really have their shit together Shot My TV by Marky - Underdog Fanzine Wow!!! Geheimtipp! Shot My TV - kauhajokinyt.fi/~jplaitio/news.html Skinny Bones is a familiar name for many Ramones fans. He has Ramones related background with many ways. The Ramones recorded and released three songs Marky Ramone and Skinny Bones wrote together: Anxiety and The Job That Ate My Brain in Mondo Bizarro and Have A Nice Day in Adios Amigos. Skinny Bones also did some songs together with Dee Dee Ramone. One of those songs will be included in Shot My TV album by Skinny Bones And The Gonedaddys. Great Italian labels will release Shot My TV, the Nicotine Records will release CD and Tornado Ride Records LP version. CD comes out on September 15, 2009. - Shot My TV has 12 original songs written by me and a bonus track Nothing Is Innocent. Dee Dee wrote words and I wrote music of Nothing Is Innocent. It was Joey Ramone's favourite of songs I wrote with Dee Dee, explained Skinny Bones to me on September 10, 2009. As a background info I wanna also mention, that Skinny played in many Resistance shows. In early 90's, Joey put together Resistance so he could speak freely about his true political thoughts. Al Maddy explains lot of Resistance in my new book Ramones: Soundtrack Of Our Lives. Also Skinny Bones was first singer in Marky Ramone And The Intruders, and he wrote many songs together with Marky to Intruders debut album. Soon after he was replaced by Todd Youth. Todd Youth quit from Marky's band and Skinny Bones came back for a while. Remember to check out new Skinny Bones And The Gonedaddys album Shot My TV. Shot My TV - www.veglam.com There's apparently a lot of history behind this project. In the past,Skinny Bones recorded several songs with Dee-Dee Ramone before working with Marky Ramone. Later, He also played with Joey in a band called Resistance and also opened for bands such as the SEX PISTOLS, The MISFITS, BAD RELIGION, etc. It seems like Skinny Bones could have been named "Skinny Ramone" instead when you read his biography! The last song on this CD "Nothing Is Innocent" is actually co-written with Dee Dee Ramone. On this album, Skinny teamed up with New York punk rockers The GONEDADDYS to offer us 13 rockin' power pop songs in which the old school punk spirit can even be found in the titles themselves ("Shit In My Head", "How To Be A Punk" or "I Wannna Pet Cats For A Living"(a great song that could have been on a RAMONES album!) Star Wars fans will also rock to "Luv Me Like Darth Vader".And since we're talking about New York, you'll also find some Johnny Thunders influence in "Last Time" (a song that reminds me of The HANGMEN too) and the most power pop songs ("Time Won't Let Me Wait", "Telephone"...) on this album have a sweet 60s flavour mixed to the spirit of the NEW YORK DOLLS. So, do I really have to add that early NY punk rock fans will love this album. |
