Passo e chiudo con un bel disco di trash’n’roll dato alle stampe dall’iperattiva Nicotine (nicotinercords.com). La label di Tortona abituata a raccattare spostati di mezzo mondo, non poteva di certo farsi scappare questi decerebrati chiamati BRAIN EATERS. Che conterrà il cd? Indie finocchio, post-rock da suicidio, elettronica frigida, country-pop lacrimevole? Col cazzo! Monsters, Sex and Rock’n’Roll sono tre quarti d’ora di garage sperticato e r’n’r tiratissimo, suonato da 4 psicopatici parigini immersi in un immaginario di mostri raccapriccianti, film di serie z, troie di quart’ordine e alcol spaccabudella. Si fotta il politicamente corretto e bla, bla, bla. Mollate i freni inibitori e godete del surf a 300 all’ora (Fu Manchu), del garage-punk da bava alla bocca (Die Loser Die!), del r’n’r disperato (Miss Chicken Iq) e di tutto questo popò di immondizia assortita. È tutta salute, ve l’assicuro.

Il titolo mantiene tutto quello che le canzoni di questo disco promettono,ovvero una dose massiccia di punk e garagebilly picchiato in maniera furibonda,con un certo gusto retrò,a partire dall'omaggio al film di Bruno VeSoto del moniker,a permeare tutto il lavoro per arrivare alle armonie arabeggianti di(come with me to the Casbah), e altre amenità da freacks dei film di serie z di sesso e di lotta mexicana.
Roba per divertirsi,che 15 anni fa avrebbe fatto il botto accanto a nomi come Frenzy,Defctors e Rev.Horton Heat.

L'immaginario è quello dei film horror degli anni 50 come ricorda il loro nome preso pari pari da una pellicola del 1958, e come ci mostrano anche le grafiche del loro album. Il contenuto è sano garage punk registrato volutamente lo-fi e senza fronzoli, nudo e crudo come piace a noi. Retaggi psychobilly si scorgono tra le tracce, come ad esempio "Beaver Fever" o "A good day to die", ma ciò che emerge da questo disco è la schizofrenia di questi ragazzi francesi, che con i loro riff tanto semplici quanto accattivanti confezionano un prodotto di ottima fattura.
Quindici brani che scorrono via velocemente tra continui richiami cinematografici come "Fu Manchu (is watching you)", e orecchiabili melodie come quella della title-track. Il punkrock martellante di "Lost, lonely and vicious" o quello arabeggiante di "Come with me to the casbah" lascia spazio anche al surf di "Hitman" e di "Surfin' with sharks". Tutti gli stereotipi e le sfaccettature del punkrock lo-fi sono pienamente rispettati in questo album che cresce con gli ascolti.
"Monsters, Sex and Rock'n'roll" consolida l'ottima prova da talent scout della nostrana Nicotine Records nel scovare artisti di grande calibro in giro per l'Europa. Album sicuramente consigliato su tutta la linea sopratutto agli amanti del vero garage.

Incredibly strange carnival!
Nella quarta di copertina del booklet, un mostruoso professore indica i cervelli sotto spirito di Elvis e Dee Dee, come a voler mostrare da dove prendono le mosse i Brain Eaters per mettere in piedi il loro strano carnevale.
Al rockabilly anni `50 e alla semplicità del punk dei Ramones dobbiamo necessariamente aggiungere Cramps e Misfits, dai quali si trae ingente ispirazione per l`apparato concettuale e visivo, nonché per il monicker stesso dei Brain Eaters. Questi francesi attaccano infatti una serie di quindici brevi pezzi ispirati dalla mostrografia dei B-movie di mezzo secolo fa, dall`erotismo che ancora non poteva beneficiare della visione a colori, da grottesche interpretazioni western e deviazioni varie su questi temi.
L`apparato iconografico è decisamente godibile, ma quello uditivo non è certo da meno: lo spirito della band si tramuta in schegge che passano dal rock`n`roll più che datato all`horror punk, soffermandosi su surf e garage per omaggiare al meglio quelle che per i Brain Eaters sono le vere radici della musica. Esplosivo e perennemente in agitazione questo quartetto parigino si diletta con una miscela di sano rockabilly, surf-punk, garage e sci-fi/mexican. Appassionato di b-movies degli anni ’50, soprattutto di horror, in un brillante fotomontaggio, nel libretto, un improbabile scienziato pazzo indica due barattoli contenenti i cervelli di Elvis Presley e di Dee Dee Ramone. In quest’immagine viene perfettamente riassunta la miscela musicale dei Brain Eaters.
Nei quarantatre minuti del cd non ci si stanca mai, anzi nel vocabolario dei francesi non esistono le parole noia e relax, perché sono in continua tensione. I brani non superano mai i tre minuti e mezzo, e sono veloci, come un pezzo punk, ma intensi come ogni sano brano di rock’n’roll. I quattro parigini sono cresciuti oltre che con Elvis ed i Ramones anche con Bo Didley ed i Cramps. Spesso, infatti, la base ritmica rende i pezzi sincopati ed il cantante, Prof Boubou mette nelle canzoni quell’enfasi propria di Lux Interior.
Se molti gruppi considerati di gran moda riciclano in malo modo cose trascurabili degli anni ’80, ben vengano i Brain Eaters con il loro malsano rock’n’roll e lunga vita ad Elvis ed ai suoi figli!.

As the band's name and album title imply this is indeed dragster punk'n'roll/rockabilly with b-movie lyrics. Clichés galore, but Brain Eaters is so damn good at it, and fortunately they got a great singer in Prof Boubou. One of the better graduates of the Cramps School of Sleazebilly. From the country that brought you Jean Rollin's lesbian vampires. Très Bien!

This Paris gang of punks, frat rockers and movie freaks bring you a delicious meal of brain burgers, stuffed cannibals and Mexican bimbos! Hell yeah B-movies rule in this crazy experience of surf, punk & garage extravaganza. So don’t forget to pay some attention to the samples between the songs! Movie buffs will have a good time here.

The sound of the Brain Eaters is best described as Elvis meeting The Ramones for an afternoon full of surfing pleasure on the beach! Their punk-surf infested sound is drenched in pure energy that finds its origin in the fifties rock and roll & sixties garage and punk sound.
With tunes like “Beaver Fever” and Die Loser Die one can discover the more melodic side of the band but on a tune like “Lost, Lonely and Vicious” the band certainly give the best they can to create a wall of sound over intelligent lyrics. This is Raunch and Roll. But don’t let them fool you. Everything is in control, whatever you might think, how mean they might sound the sound is always well balanced and production values are clearly defined here. Jungle drums and yells are never far away and with Miss Chicken IQ the melodic band is back for yet another nice tune. Still the band has a couple of more tricks upon their sleeve. “Come with me to the Cashbah” or “Monster In the Dragster” are tunes that are certainly worth to check out.

My top favourites are without doubt “Fu Manchu” and “Beaver Fever”, but I’ll bet that many of you unquestionably will appeal to the rest of the album as well. Monsters, Sex and Rock ‘n’ Roll is the debut of this band and it is the result of three years of hard work and gigging. Having shared their stage with bands like King Kahn, Reverent Horton Heat, Kings of Nuthin' and many others it was only a logical step to record this album.
This summer the guys are all over France and have even a couple of stints in Germany, hopefully Belgium is next on their list

Disco d'esordio per questi pazzoidi francesi pescati dalla sempre più attiva italica Nicotine Records, di cui avevamo già recensito e apprezzato The Slapstick, Highschool Lockers, Dee Jaywalker e tanti altri. Come al solito i gruppi della label ligure sono riconducibili quasi tutti a un grande genere madre che si chiama rock'n'roll. Certo, ci sono delle sottocategorie, dal punk, al garage, al surf, al power pop ma sempre lì siamo. I Brain Eaters ci tolgono l'imbarazzo di classificarli perchè praticamente hanno al loro interno tutti questi generi e se ne sbattono altamente di creare problemi ai recensori. Copertina con tanto di richiamo agli anni 50, a film horror di zerie Z, Misfits, Fuzztones, ma anche scemate western, suoni messicani, tutto mescolato in un pout-pourri altamente energico. Quindici brani schizzati, con veri titoli da loser ma anche demenziali come "A Good Day To Die", "Die Loser Die" (ehi, i Misfits!) e poi un brano completamente fuori di capoccia, quasi country surf, dedicato ai Fu Manchu, "Fu Manchu (Is Watching You)", seguito dal rockabilly scatenato di "From Hell With Love". A metà disco realizzo che vedere questi ragazzi dal vivo deve essere un'esperienza travolgente e infatti a guardare i filmati sul loro sito c'è da sperare vivamente che vengano da noi. Poco altro da dire, il disco è una bomba, se vi piace il genere, fatelo immediatamente vostro. Un appello alla Nicotine: portateli, se potete, in Italia.

Cose carine in questo 2007 ne sono già uscite (mi vengono in mente i lavori di Valentines, Queers, Apers, Tunas…), ma questi Brain Eaters sono decisamente la band che più ha stuzzicato il mio interesse.
Sarà forse perché non li conoscevo minimamente, forse perché mi sono innamorato della copertina e dell’artwork appena ho aperto il pacchetto mandatomi dalla Nicotine, o forse semplicemente perché questo è rock’n’roll, fatto sta che questo cd sta diventando una droga.
Il gruppo viene da Parigi (una band francese valida? Oddio, questa è nuova…) ed il titolo del loro nuovo album dice già tutto: 4 malati mentali alle prese con mostri, donne nude nonché mutanti, perversioni, wrestler messicani e film horror; il tutto condito da scariche adrenaliniche di puro r’n’r, con tanto di influenze garage e surf (stupenda in questo senso Fu Manchu Is Watching You), e da una voce molto psicotica. L’album dura quasi ¾ d’ora ma non c’è tempo per annoiarsi: un sound caldo, elettrizzante ed assolutamente coinvolgente, immagino che da vivo debbano essere un vero spettacolo!
Così come lo è il loro sito, dove vi consiglio di farvi un giro per rendervi conto della demenza dei soggetti.
Consigliato a tutti: horror-r’n’r for the masses!

Obwohl die Brain Eaters aus Paris ihren “Supremo Raunch´n´Roll from Hell“ bereits seit über 7 Jahren zelebrieren, liegt erst jetzt ihr erster richtiger Longplayer vor, der daher auf jahrelanger Praxis basiert und eine ausgereifte Leistungsschau der bisherigen Karriere der 4 Franzosen darstellt.
Die Brain Eaters sind ausgesprochene Liebhaber von B-Movies und dem ganzen damit zusammenhängenden Trash, was sich - unschwer zu erkennen - auch in der Layoutarbeit der Band und den Songtiteln manifestiert. Es überrascht daher auch nicht, dass sich der nach vorne preschende Rock´n´Roll der Brain Eaters wie eine punkrockgetränkte Speedversion der Cramps anhört, was durch den großartigen Gesang des exaltierten Entertainers Prof Boubou nur noch unterstrichen wird. Es klingen auch immer wieder leichte Einflüsse aus dem Surf-, Garage- und Country-Bereich an, doch es dominiert eindeutig fröhlicher und unglaublich eingängiger Uptempo-Rock´n´Roll, der nicht die x-te Kopie der Bones, sondern ein in Jahren entwickeltes ureigenes Gewächs ist.
Schade, dass eine Band mit einer derartig individuellen Klasse nicht viel bekannter ist und stattdessen Jahr für Jahr immer die gleichen Langweiler deutsche Bühnen besetzen. Die Brain Eaters hätten - live wie auf Platte - das große Publikum verdient, das sich mittlerweile angeödet von vermeintlichen Größen wie den Turbo A.C.´s abwendet.

Nicotine Records never fail to impress me with their releases and this new album from the Brain Eaters is no exception. There's fifteen solid Rock N Roll numbers on this release and with titles like 'Lost, Lonely And Vicious', 'A Good Day To Die', 'Die Loser Die' and 'Naked Girls Of The Wild West' you really can't go wrong. Looking at their website I think these guys hail from France who have a good history of producing kick ass Garage Punk bands. If you like a bit of fun to your music then you can't do no worse than this album. Just check out the Bass/Guitar work from Captain Francky and Heavy Jeecee and tell me this isn't what Rock N Roll is all about.
