Riding The High Horse by Fred Schmidtlein - www.home-of-rock.de

Any Feingeister in the House? Ne?
Coole Platte!

The Deviltones look like lecherous, rowdy inebriates, and fortuitously this gleeful abuse of booze and pharmaceuticals is made manifest on "Riding The High Horse." Dissipated deadbeats who uniformly drink from the same tainted well that makes rock and roll such a corruptive joy.The Deviltone's sleazoid, balls-to-the-wall, 'Bury me an Angel' biker boogie is liberally peppered with the adrenalinized buffoonery of Nashville Pussy, murderous alcoholic road rage and cemented with the lurid rock thrust of prime Circus of Power...
Each of these petroleum soaked, zesty odes to the road, boast hell and fist raising taunts, fire an' brimstone Les Paul and wasted, booze-to-loose vocals, none more eloquent than the bracing, '13.69.' The mix is adequately gritty, raw and pissed off, but does suffer from a dearth of low end ballast, otherwise this disc is a hootenanny. If Steppenwolf had OD'd in 71', their desiccated, cocaine polluted corpses might now generate a similarly electric, zombiefied hell-chug. "Riding The High Horse" exudes late-night bar room chaos that's bound to make any boozy soiree go with a swing even if said swing is a nasty roundhouse to the jaw. Granted this album has all the originality of a bacon sandwich but sometimes that's all that will genuinely satisfy

Ahhh, The Deviltones. I saw them live in Las Vegas a few years back, and listened to an earlier recording of theirs. I really liked them live, but the recording (it's long gone now) sort of came and went. I think a lot of dirty rock and roll bands these days just don't capture the scum they give live on tape, and are better enjoyed in person. This CD blows a hole in the ass of that theory ! Man, it's just cool as hell, top to bottom. I have to say they wrote one of the catchiest songs I've heard in a while (track number 4, "13-69"); I played it three times in a row when I was giving this it's first listen. Based on the pictures in the CD, they're into choppers and cars and tits (although I'd suggest more tits on the next record). Musically the style is straight up rock & roll, heavy Thunders / Angus influenced guitars and songwriting, but with a harder twist. They could play your favorite outlaw biker party or local watering hole, and probably make friends at both. Thumbs up!

So, there's this greasy wild-eyed, scraggly-looking dude outside of my house right now. His battered green Chevy Nova is on fire, and the motherfucker is trying to beat out the flames with his trucker hat. It's awesome. And it's also exactly what The Deviltones are like. Doomed rednecks overheated engines

4 out of 5 stars
