Remember back in the day when Peter Zaremba would host 120 Minutes? The days when MTV actually was somewhat cutting edge. I always thought Zaremba was a cool dude. Probably still is. I still dig early Fleshtones stuff. "Roman Gods" and "Hexbreaker" have survived many a purge. Their "Shadow Line" performance from 'Urgh! A Music War' was a revelation for the young me. Defintely my favorite Eighties-garage rock revivalists. About five years ago I went to see them play. I asked Zaremba beforehand to play "Shadow Line" and he jovially replied something to the extent that he'd forgotten they'd even written that tune. Still a real cool guy. But the show was a real drag, at least three hours of now very very stale garage-cum-bar rock, replete with chicken walking on the bar and other hackneyed nonsense. It was worse (and longer) than a (modern-day) Cynics show. So, while I have respect for these guys, obviously 'Beach Head' has little to offer anyone, unless you're looking for old dudes trying to revive their own Eighties-revivial. Me, I'd rather go back and watch them do "Shadow Line" on a grainy VHS tape and revel in their past glory.

Die CD-Version des Albums erschien bereits 2005 auf YepRoc, jetzt ist via Nicotine aus Italien auch das Vinyl erschienen und ich zitiere mich einfach selbst: Dieses Jahr können die New Yorker Garage-Rocker ihren 30. Geburtstag feiern, und zu feiern gibt es auf jeden Fall mehr als die Tatsache, dass Peter Zaremba und Anhang so lange durchgehalten haben. Denn in Zeiten, da allenthalben junge Bands diesen klassischen Sound für sich neu entdecken, ist es auch immer wieder schön, ein Referenz-Objekt zur Hand zu haben. Und mögen auch andere die Früchte dessen ernten, was Bands wie die FLESHTONES einst gesät haben, so besteht angesichts dieser feinen Platte kein Grund zu Bitterkeit. "Beach Head" ist das zweite Album der Band für Yep Roc, produziert hat aus nahe liegenden Gründen auch diesmal Rick Miller von SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS, unterstützt von Jim Diamond. Das Ergebnis dieser Zusammenarbeit sind elf lässig shakende Garagerock-Kracher mit Fuzzgitarren und dezenten Orgelklängen, und wenn man einen ausgelassen, fröhlichen Song wie "I am what I am" so hört (der zudem etwas an den Stones-Klassiker "Starfucker" erinnert), ist man schon verblüfft, wie gelenkig die alten Herrschaften noch zur Sache gehen. "Beach Head" ist alles andere als ein schlappes Spätwerk, ist ein feuriges Album, das sich aus einem knappen Dutzend Song-Unikaten zusammengesetzt, und es braucht einfach eine Band wie die FLESHTONES, um einen schmusigen Hit wie den Rausschmeißer "Late september moon" zu schreiben. Gekonnt ist eben gekonnt. Eine Platte mit Herz, Seele und viel Feuer.

Wow! Talk about getting the right folks to produce your album, half of the tracks are produced by Dirtbombs' Jim Diamond, the rest by Southern Culture On The Skids's Rick Miller. After some 29 odd years the Queens garage giants are still as vital as ever, from the debut "Roman Gods" to their previous "Do You Swing?" the Fleshtones prove they are still the top daddies of garagerock. And "Beachhead" picks up where "Do You Swing?" left, basic fuzzed out rhythm & blues rawk done with attitude and a great knack for writing catchy party stompers. The vinyl version has one extra track, “Superrock Baby”. The Fleshtones are one of the best goddamn live bands on the face of the earth, and to their credit they expertly transform their outerworldly live energy into their albums. "Beachhead" is a must for fans and for anyone who are tired of all the new fake 'garage' bands on MTV - The Fleshtones are the real deal, now shake yer ass!! Per onorare l’intestazione della rubrica è d’obbligo chiudere con la storia, passata e presente, del garage mondiale. “Trent’anni di musica sul groppone e non sentirli!” Questo si dovrebbe scrivere sulla press sheet di Beachhead dei FLESHTONES, e non sarebbe la solita cazzata da ufficio stampa. La mitica band guidata dall’inossidabile Peter Zeremba, è rimasta a galla durante tutte le ondate del nuovo rock alternativo. Il segreto sta nella voglia di divertirsi e divertire a suon di garage selvaggio, genuino r&b, elettrizzante sixties punk e frat rock da pelle d’oca. Dopo una ventina di album ufficiali, i cinquantenni di New York ruggiscono ancora come leoni affamati: Bigger & Better, Pretty Pretty Pretty e I Am What I Am sono il miglior antidoto contro ogni forma di depressione. Roba tosta che vi shakera membra e cervello, ripulendovi da capo a piedi. Occhio ragazzi… qui non si parla del cd di Beachhead, uscito nel 2005 su Yep Roc. Stavolta voliamo alto, con classe e stile. Mi riferisco alla versione in vinile amorevolmente confezionata dalla nostra Nicotine (nicotinerecords.com). Nuova copertina “estiva” disegnata dal bravo Pedro, vinilone blu elettrico e persino un pezzo in più rispetto all’asettico compact. Che aspettate?

Quando l’unione fa la buona riuscita di un progetto, cioè=la Nicotine, agguerrita etichetta italiana dedita alla scoperta e promozione di gruppi garage/punk italiani e non solo e i Fleshtones, band storica del rock con la R maiuscola che si uniscono per dare vita al vinile dell’ultima prova dei nostri ‘Beachhead’, precedentemente uscita in cd nel 2005. Master appositamente creato per il caro vecchio immarcescibile stupendo opera d’arte (si noti l’adorazione che sfiora il feticismo dello scrivente) formato 12’’, vinile colorato azzurro in edizione limitata a soli duecento esemplari (andare alla voce opera d’arte), copertina disegnata da Pedro e approvata dal leader Peter Zaremba medesimo, e brano aggiunto Superrock Baby appositamente, lo ribadiamo, per il suddetto vecchio, caro vinile. Passando dalle considerazioni tecniche e andando al disco vero e proprio=prodotto musicale, possiamo dire che i Fleshtones hanno fatto centro producendosi semplicemente in quello che sanno fare cioè suonare, che questi attempati ma solo anagraficamente, signori del rock’n’roll hanno creato una bella raccolta di brani che non mostrano acciacchi, una incredibile miscela di rnb, rock’n’roll, garage, beat suonato senza fronzoli e senza ripensamenti che si sussegue piacevolmente a tutta velocità e obbliga l’ascoltatore o gli ascoltatori (ideale in un party) a muoversi senza ritegno, a ballare con frenesia e irretimento muscolare e divertirsi al ritmo degli scatenati hit di ‘Beachhead’. Il disco è l’ennesimo concentrato della gioia di vivere tradotta in musica che fa dei Fleshtones un gruppo unico. Forse il segreto che sta alla base della loro formula è proprio questo: i Fleshtones si divertono ancora come matti, e riescono a divertire e coinvolgere nuove generazioni di fans a quasi trent’anni dai loro esordi al CBGB’s. Beachhead non fa eccezione: in poco meno di mezz’ora il quartetto della Grande Mela mette in fila undici episodi di esplosivo Super Rock, vale a dire la fantastica mistura di 60’s-garage, beat e rock’n’roll che i Fleshtones hanno messo a punto per regalarci attimi di divertimento puro ed energia sfrenata (…) Fatevi un regalo: recuperate questo disco e suonatelo a tutto volume, con buona pace dei vicini!
